1. face many difficulties：动宾结构，强调动作。

2. be faced with many difficulties：系表结构，强调状态。

试比较：

He is facing many difficulties, but he is capable to overcome them.（不用faces，因为一般现在时表示习惯性、经常性的动作，故用现在进行时。）

He is faced with many difficulties, but he is capable to overcome them.（系表结构用一般现在时，表示目前的状态）
