rely on someone/something to do something有两种不同的意义,因而结构也不同。
1. to trust someone or something to do something for you.相信或信赖某人会为你做某事。
在这个意义上,sb是宾语,to do不定式是宾语补足语。从以下三个词典例句可以看出,这个意义的rely on都与情态动词can/could连用。不定式是宾补,其逻辑主语是宾语。改为被动句后,宾语成了主语,不定式则为主语补足语。
Can we rely on him to support us?
You can rely on me to keep your secret.
He can't be relied on to tell the truth。
2. to need something in order to continue living,existing, or operating. 主语需要或依赖某人或某事以便维持生存或存在或发挥作用。
在这个意义上,sb/sth是宾语,不定式是目的状语。不定式的逻辑主语是句子的主语。如果改为被动句的话,宾语成了主语,原主语省略,不定式的修饰关系就不清楚了,造成逻辑混乱。所以这个意义的rely on sb/sth to do是不能改为被动句的。
The museum relies on voluntary donations to keep open.
These days we rely heavily on computers to organize our work.
以上两种不同的意义,情态动词can/could的使用是判断的标准。所以说,句子有情态动词can,则为以上第一种意义,不定式是宾补,就可以改为被动句。
