first place,third place前是否要加定冠词the

问题描述

1. 参考书上有这样一个句子：He won first place in the competition.

可是为什么这句话 first 前不加 the？是它错了吗？

2. 我又看了《牛津高阶英汉双解字典（第8版）》，里面有个句子：

He finished in third place. 他得了第三名。

请问为什么这里 third 前不用 the？

▲place 表示“名次”时，通常与序数词连用，其前的定冠词通常省略。表示获得第几名，常与动词get, take, win, gain, be (come, finish) in等连用。如：

Jerry finished in fifth place. 杰里得了第五名。

You were in second place in a race. 你在比赛中获第二名。

He took second place in the long jump. 他在跳远比赛中获得了第二名。

John took first place in the history exam. 约翰在历史考试中得第一名。

The runner from Kenya won first place. 肯尼亚的赛跑运动员赢得第一名。

I am still amazed that she won first prize.  她得了第一名，我至今仍然感到惊诧。

Winning first place must have been quite a thrill. 赢得第一名肯定让人非常激动。

She came in second place in the diving contest. 她在跳水比赛中获得了第二名。

Never in my wildest dreams did I expect to win first place. 我能得第一名，做梦也没有想到。
