老师说下面句子中的for the simple reason that不能换成for the simple reason why：
She didn’t answer for the simple reason that she couldn’t think of anything to say.
但记得在一本语法书上看到过：在reason 后可以用why引导定语从句，也可用that引导定语从句，也可省略不用。请问：这句为什么只用 for the simple reason that 而不能用 for the simple reason why 呢？谢谢老师！

陈根花老师说：for the reason that 或 for the simple reason that 可视为固定搭配（总是用 that，不用 why），其实它就相当于连词 because（表示原因），可以理解为一个原因状语从句。
付老师：
例句中的由that引导的是同位语从句，并非定语从句。如果改成why来引导，则形式上的确变成了定语从句，但该句子的句意就不通了。另外，举一个先行词是reason，用that来引导定语从句的例子：I don't believe the reason that he gave.
