“在船上”是on the ship还是in the ship

请问下面一句是填介词 on 还是 in？或是两者都可以？

Why didn’t the traveler eat anything on the first day ______ the ship?

另外，表示“上船”，是用 get on the ship 还是 get in the ship? 比较下面这句：

So he bought a ticket with that little money he had and got ______ the ship.

这里该填 in 还是 on？或是两者都可以？

在表示船上有多少人或物等意思时，ship 前用介词 in 或 on 均可，但以用 on 为普通：

How many people were there in / on that ship? 那条船上有多少人？( 周国珍主编 《英汉详注词典》p.1327)

表示“上船”，是用 get on the ship 和 get in the ship 都可以，仍以用 on 为普通：

So he bought a ticket with that little money he had and got on / in the ship.
