过去完成时的用法疑问

In the centre of the hall, there were a number of tall structures which contained coloured lights.

These lights flickered continuously like traffic lights which have gone mad.

这里因为是比喻的缘故，所以跟上下文没有关系吗？

同意曹老师解答观点，灯不停闪烁，是在灯发生故障之间发生，属于过去的过去，应该用过去完成时态。

曹老师：

灯在闪烁，用的是过去时。which had got mad. 之所以用过去完成时，是因为系词get指的是变坏。这个时候是坏的，一闪一闪的，变坏是在这个时候之前发生的，所以要用过去完成时。如果系词不是get，而是be，就用一般过去时了。traffic lights which were mad.
