There I was thinking you were hard at work and you were upstairs in bed all the while! 我以为你在努力工作，可你却一直在楼上躺着！
上面句子中的 all the while 意思是是“一直”，但我记得有个短语 all the time 也是表示“一直”，请问它们的区别是什么？

前面几位老师的解答都有理有据，而且引用的也是权威词典。我完全赞同。但我有这样一个感觉（不一定对，提出来与大家讨论）：
虽然两者在意义上基本相同，但在用法略有区别：
1. 当表示长时间的“一直”时，多用 all the time。如：
The language is changing all the time. 这种语言一直在变化。
Cars are getting better all the time. 汽车的性能一直是越来越好。
The museum’s collection is growing all the time. 博物馆的收藏品一直在增加。
New scientific discoveries are being made all the time. 科学新发现一直层出不穷。
2. 当表示短时间的“一直”时，多用 all the while，尤其是当表示某事在发生或进行时另一动作一直在持续时，通常用 all the time。如：
All the while the people at the next table watched me eat. 我吃东西的时候邻桌的人一直在看我。
She continued working, all the while keeping an eye on the clock. 她继续地工作，不停地注意着时间。
She pretended to be asleep, but all the while she was watching him. 她假装睡着了，其实整段时间她一直在观察他。
The bird hopped across the lawn, keeping a sharp lookout all the while. 小鸟在草坪上跳来跳去，一直保持着高度警惕。
