换句话说，hundreds of, thousands of, millions of 后面的名词到底用不用定冠词？但根据网上查到的例子，通常是不用的。

▲hundreds of, thousands of, millions of 分别表示“数百个”“数以百计的”，“数千个”“数以千计的”，“数百万个”“数以百万计的”，从意义上看，它们都表示泛指或非确指，故其后的名词均不用定冠词，也不用其他特指限定词。如：

He went on driving for hundreds of miles. 他继续驾驶汽车走了数百英里。

Hundreds of buildings have sprung up this year. 今年盖起了成百上千座大楼。

Thousands of trees have fallen victim to this disease. 有数千株树遭受这种病害。

Thousands of people go to the seaside every year. 每年成千上万的人到海滨去。

Millions of jobs are likely to be lost. 数以百万计的工作机会将可能丧失。

Dinosaurs inhabited the earth millions of years ago. 数百万年前恐龙居住在地球上。

▲但我想，如果要是表示某个特定人群或事物中的“数百个”“数千个”“数百万个”呢？能不能说 hundreds of the…, thousands of these…, millions of those…, hundreds of us, thousands of them 等等呢？我查了手头一些词典，均没有查到。不过我在新概念英语第三册第33课查到这样一个句子：

The lorry was loaded with empty beer bottles and hundreds of them slid off the back of the vehicle and on to the road. 卡车上装着空啤酒瓶。成百只瓶子顺势从卡车后面滑出车外落在马路上。

很显然这个句子中的代词them 在此用于指代 the empty beer bottles。
