1. 与具体人 / 物连用时，多用fewer than, 在非正式语体中也可用less than。如：
One in ten women can cook fewer than three meals without looking at a recipe book or asking for help. 十分之一的女性在不查看食谱书或没有帮助的情况下，连三道菜也做不出。
2. 但在与表示时间 / 距离 / 金额的计量名词（days/ hours/ miles/ dollars）连用时，要用less than+ 数词 + 计量名词结构：
In less than two years, no fewer than three coalitions have formed with the intent of building mobile handset operating systems with input from all comers. 在不到两年的时间里至少形成了三个联盟，目标都是建立适于所有机型输入的移动手机操系统。

《牛津英语用法指南》313.9 指出：“less 与复数形式连用原本是很古老的用法，但现在越来越得到肯定。如：There were less people than I expected. 人数比我预期的要少。”
如果fewer than 和 less than 中两个词之间没有其它单词，它们的意思都是“少于”、“不到”。在“基数词+表示具体的人或物的名词”结构前面通常使用fewer than，在非正式语体中，也可以用less than；在“基数词+表示时间、距离、金额的计量名词（如hour，mile， dollar等）”前面要用less than，不能用fewer than。例如：
There were fewer than 20 applications. 申请表不到20份。
The whole of Switzerland has less than six million inhabitants. 整个瑞士的居民不足六百万。
I bought it for less than ten pence. (less than不能fewer than) 我买它花了不到十个便士。
