Much of the city lies 3 meters below the sea level.
many 用于“many of + 限定词 + 复数名词”是 many 的最常见用法之一。
Many of the farmers grow rice.
I don’t know many of your friends.
We share many of the same likes and dislikes.
Many of the old buildings are stillintact.
Many of the trees were destroyed in thestorm.
Many of my students send cards to me.
Many of the performers were of professional standard.
Science can penetrate many of nature’s mysteries.
Many of our players are very young andkeen.
Many of the shipyard workers face losing their jobs.
Many of the exhibits were frown here from Canada.
We gave away many of thevegetables from our garden.
Many of the poorer people were forced to migrate to thecities to look for work.
1. much 除指代不可数名词外,也可指代可数名词的一部分,其中“much of + 限定词(如a, the, this, that, my, his…)+ 单数可数名词”就是最常用的结构之一。如:
Much of the building has been destroyed in the earthquake.
Much of the book is about the history of the village.
2.“Much of ...”
You can't see much of a country in a week .
Much of the city lies 3 meters below the sea level.
刘老师:“many of + 限定词(如a, the, this, that, my, his…)+ 单数可数名词” 确实没有。但“many of + 限定词(如the, this, that, my, his…)+ 复数名词”是有的。参见《牛津英语用法指南》第三版第357节:much of 和 many of 用于 限定词(如a, the, my,this)和代词之前(我按:此处如果用 many of 则不能用a):
I won't pass the exam:I've missed too many of my lessons.
You can't see much of acountry in a week.
You can't see many of the countries in a week.(我按:此句是我编的,不一定正确)此指众多国家中的的很多国家。
