never…and…与never…or…的用法疑问

下面句子的划线部分在 never 后面用了连词 and，但根据翻译来看，它否定了两者，这样用也对吗？为什么不用连词 or 呢？请老师具体说说 never…and…与never…or…的用法区别。

Freddy and his band realized that they must leave the country before it became too painful for them. So they left  Britain , to which they were never to return, and went back to the lake. 弗雷迪和他的乐队终于明白，他们应在还未觉得太痛苦之前就离开英国。所以他们离开了英国，再也不回来英国或是回到湖区了。

——我觉得，整个句子的翻译不是很到位。似乎应该这样翻译：

“弗雷迪和他的乐队意识到，趁着还没有感到太痛苦之时他们必须离开这个国家。所以，他们就离开了英国，从此再也不打算回去，然后重新回到湖里去了。”

2. So they left  Britain , to which they were never to return, and went back to the lake.

句子主干是：they left Britain, and went back to the lake.

left 跟went 是并列成分：离开英国，然后回到湖里去。

and went 跟定语从句中的never 无关。

不要受汉语翻译的影响，汉译把定语从句跟and went.....并列起来了。

请问：“或是回到湖区了”——这是课本的翻译吗？

So they left  Britain , to which they were never to return, and went back to the lake. 所以他们离开了英国，再也不回来英国或是回到湖区了。

上述译文有误，应该改为：所以他们离开了英国，（他们打算永远不回英国去，）回到湖区了。

to which they were never to return 是一个非限制性定语从句，Britain 是该从句修饰的先行词。 went 和 left 是并列谓语。
